Nat Museum Speakers Series Dr Peggy - Maritime Heritage

Dr. Peggy Leshikar-Denton long time Archieologist of the Cayman Islands National Museum, talks on the the Maritime Heritage, first discovery and early visiters to the Cayman Islands such as Christopher Columbus and his son Ferdinand in 1503 and later by Sir Francis Drake in 1586.

Dr. Peggy the Cayman Maritime History covering Over Five Centuries of Maritime Heritage:

Pre-1500s - untouched natural history

1500s - hazards, landmarks, turtle fishing grounds

1600s-1730  - fishing camps, english setlement, privateers & pirates in the spanish main

1700s - sugar & wars, early Caymanian shipbuilding

1800s - Turtle fishing industry, merchant trade, emancipation

19oos - 2000s - Fishing, merchant trade, world wars and tourism
